This doesn't mean simply taking an action photo. Capturing the verb is much more than that. Photojournalism is about showing the world a story of something that really happened. It strives to convey what is happening and tell the story in just one great shot. Photojournalism allows the viewer to see through your eyes for just a moment.
ASSIGNMENT
In the first two assignments you practiced the art of seeing through the camera lens. You learned to seek out unique angles, identify quality compositions, and be more intentional when taking photographs. For project three, you will put these skills to the test.
Your assignment is to post to the blog three "action" shots utilizing the principles of good photojournalism. You will begin practicing this photographic style in the Eagle's Nest by capturing interesting pool and table tennis shots. Then, later in the week, shoot some photos during your time at SkyZone. A photo from Jerusalem Farms is also acceptable.
Your photos must capture the action, emotion, and story of each location. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to be the subject of the photo (no selfies) and YOU MUST include people in each photo.
Tips:
- Get in close (remember NOT to use your camera's zoom)
- Don't use your flash (it will only make your photos look unprofessional)
- Find unusual angles (camera higher or lower always works!)
- Take a lot of photos (you can always delete the bad ones)
- Go beyond cliches (be original)
- Avoid obvious posing (only document what happens naturally)
- Look for clean backgrounds (no need to clutter up the visual story)
- Not every photo needs to show someone's face (hands and body are important too)

Or maybe it's more about fun and being in the moment. |

A face isn't required for a good photo. |

Blur can really convey movement. |

Slightly lower angle that captures the intensity between players. |

Focus on one player, or one moment. |

Interesting cropping. Note the simple background. |

Dodgeball is serious business. This background is busy, but isn't distracting because it's out of focus. |

Capture the moment of celebration. |

Or the moment before impact. |

Low angle and a range of emotions. |
![]() |
Just having a good time. Good to see some faces in focus and others blurred and moving. |

Interesting angle and perfectly captured moment. |

All about the emotion through a solid composition (rule of thirds and balanced). |
